The Best Dog Collars for Golden Retrievers: Comfort, Quality & Style

by The Maasai Collection TMC 18 Sep 2026

Few breeds seem to embody happiness quite like the Golden Retriever.

Friendly, affectionate, intelligent and famously devoted to their people, Golden Retrievers have earned their place as one of the world's most loved family dogs.

They're also active dogs.

A Golden Retriever can go from sleeping peacefully at your feet to enthusiastically launching themselves towards a ball, a puddle or a potential new best friend in a matter of seconds.

So when choosing the best dog collar for a Golden Retriever, you need something that can keep up.

The ideal collar should combine strength, comfort, durability, correct sizing and quality materials while taking their beautiful, thick coat into consideration.

And if you're looking for something a little more distinctive, a handcrafted leather collar can bring together everyday practicality and exceptional style.

At The Maasai Collection, we think that's a combination particularly well suited to the Golden Retriever.

What Makes a Good Collar for a Golden Retriever?

Golden Retrievers are medium-to-large, athletic dogs with substantial necks and thick coats.

A good Golden Retriever collar should therefore be:

  • Strong and durable
  • Comfortable for everyday wear
  • Correctly fitted
  • Made with quality hardware
  • Appropriate for a larger dog
  • Easy to check and adjust
  • Suitable for their thick coat
  • Built to withstand an active lifestyle

The aim isn't simply to find the strongest or widest collar available.

It's to find the right balance between strength and comfort for your individual dog.

Why Leather Is an Excellent Choice for Golden Retrievers

Premium leather has been used for quality dog collars for generations and for good reason.

It's naturally strong and durable, making it particularly appropriate for larger, active dogs.

But leather also has another wonderful characteristic.

It gets better with age.

Quality leather gradually softens and becomes more supple with use, developing a beautiful patina and its own individual character.

Rather than fraying or being treated as a disposable accessory, a well made leather collar can accompany your dog for years when it's properly cared for.

For a Golden Retriever who is part of everyday family life, that combination of strength, longevity and comfort makes leather an excellent choice.

Why Choose a Traditional Buckle Collar?

Golden Retrievers are strong dogs.

Even a beautifully trained Golden can generate considerable force when something exciting suddenly catches their attention.

A traditional metal pin buckle provides a simple and dependable fastening.

Once correctly adjusted, the buckle allows you to create a precise fit around your dog's neck while providing the strength you would expect from quality metal hardware.

At The Maasai Collection, our collars combine premium leather with durable metal fittings because we believe the practical construction of a collar matters just as much as its appearance.

Beautiful beadwork is important.

But first, it needs to function as a collar.

What Size Collar Does a Golden Retriever Need?

There's a temptation when shopping for a Golden Retriever to simply select Large.

But we'd strongly recommend against choosing a collar based on breed alone.

Individual Golden Retrievers vary considerably.

Males are often larger than females, while age, weight, build and coat thickness can all affect neck circumference.

The best approach is very simple:

Measure your dog.

Use a flexible measuring tape around the part of the neck where the collar will naturally sit.

Keep the tape comfortably against the neck without pulling it tightly.

Then compare that measurement with the actual neck size range of the collar you're considering.

Your Golden Retrievers actual neck measurement is more reliable than a generic breed recommendation.

Don't Forget All That Golden Fur

This is particularly important with Golden Retrievers.

Their beautiful double coat can make it difficult to judge collar fit simply by looking at it.

If you measure loosely around the outside of all that fur, you may end up with a collar that's larger than your dog actually needs.

Instead, gently compress the coat with the measuring tape so you're measuring where the collar will naturally sit.

Once the collar is fitted, check underneath it regularly.

Look for:

  • Tangled or matted fur
  • Redness
  • Rubbing
  • Hair breakage
  • Skin irritation
  • Changes in the way the collar sits

Regular brushing underneath the collar can also help prevent matting, particularly around the longer feathering of the neck.

How Tight Should a Golden Retriever's Collar Be?

A Golden Retriever's collar should be secure without being tight.

A useful general guideline is the two-finger rule.

Once the collar is fastened, you should be able to comfortably slide approximately two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck.

You shouldn't have to force your fingers underneath it.

At the same time, the collar shouldn't be so loose that it slides excessively around the neck or could easily slip over your dog's head.

And remember: coat thickness can change.

After grooming, seasonal shedding or a particularly impressive haircut, check the fit again.

How Tight Should a Dog Collar Be?

What Collar Width Is Best for a Golden Retriever?

Golden Retrievers are substantial dogs and can generally carry a wider collar comfortably.

For many adult Goldens, a 2.5 cm (1") collar provides a classic balance between proportion, comfort and durability.

A wider collar can also create a striking look on a larger Golden Retriever, provided it's appropriately sized and comfortable for the individual dog.

The right width isn't simply about appearance.

Consider:

Your dog's neck circumference.

Their overall build.

The weight of the collar.

Their coat.

How the collar sits when they're moving.

The collar should complement your dog rather than overwhelm them.

Golden Retrievers and Water: An Important Consideration

There's something many Golden Retriever owners discover fairly quickly:

If there's water nearby, there's a reasonable chance your Golden will find it.

Beach.

Lake.

Creek.

Puddle.

Something that might once have been a puddle.

Golden Retrievers were developed as retrieving dogs, and many retain a natural enthusiasm for water.

Premium leather can handle the occasional splash or rainy walk, but repeated soaking isn't ideal for leather.

If your dog is heading out for a serious swim, we'd recommend removing their premium leather collar when it is safe to do so and using appropriate swimming equipment instead.

If the collar does become wet, gently wipe away excess moisture and allow it to air dry naturally.

Don't place it on a heater or use direct heat.

How to Clean a Leather Dog Collar

A Collar for Everyday Adventures

Golden Retrievers tend to be happiest when they're involved in whatever their humans are doing.

Morning walk?

Coming.

Beach?

Definitely coming.

Road trip?

Already in the car.

Trip to the café?

Obviously.

Golden Retrievers aren't dogs that simply sit in the background of family life.

They're right in the middle of it.

That's why we believe a good collar should be made to be worn and enjoyed, rather than saved for special occasions.

Quality leather will gradually develop character as your dog wears it.

Those little signs of everyday life become part of its story.

Golden Fur and Maasai Colour: A Beautiful Combination

Now for one of our favourite things about dressing a Golden Retriever.

Colour.

The warm tones of a Golden's coat provide an extraordinary backdrop for vibrant Maasai beadwork.

Deep blues and greens can create a striking contrast.

Red and black can look bold and dramatic.

Bright multicoloured patterns stand beautifully against golden fur.

And softer, more understated combinations can create a wonderfully elegant look.

Your choice doesn't have to follow a rule.

Choose the design that makes you look at your dog and think:

That's them.

Because the best accessories don't simply match a dog's coat.

They reflect their personality.

Handmade for a Dog Who Is One of a Kind

There may be millions of Golden Retrievers in the world.

But there's only one who waits at your door.

Only one who knows exactly where you keep the treats.

Only one who has perfected that particular expression that somehow persuades you to share whatever you're eating.

Your Golden is an individual.

And we believe there's something rather special about giving them something individually made.

Every The Maasai Collection collar features intricate beadwork handcrafted by talented Maasai artisan women in Kenya ... the Mamas.

The beads are placed by hand.

The patterns require extraordinary patience and skill.

And subtle variations naturally occur because these pieces aren't produced by machines.

They're made by people.

One collar. One artisan. One bead at a time.

Complete the Look With a Matching Lead

A Golden Retriever wearing a beautiful handcrafted collar already attracts attention.

Add a matching lead and things can become slightly ridiculous.

Prepare yourself for:

"Where did you get that?"

Our matching leather leads coordinate with the beadwork of our collars, creating a beautifully finished set for everyday walks.

The result combines practicality with something much more individual than the standard dog accessories you'll find in most pet stores.

Because everyday doesn't have to mean ordinary.

Quality Rather Than Disposable

One of the reasons we're passionate about premium leather is longevity.

Dog accessories shouldn't necessarily be disposable fashion.

A quality collar that's cared for properly can be used and enjoyed over a long period.

That means choosing better materials.

Looking after them.

Repairing and maintaining things where practical.

And appreciating the way natural materials develop character rather than expecting them to remain artificially perfect forever.

For us, that's a more thoughtful way of creating and buying dog accessories.

Beauty With Purpose

But there's another story behind every Maasai Collection collar.

The story of the person who made it.

Our beadwork is handcrafted by talented Maasai artisan women in Kenya using skills passed down through generations.

We want the Mamas to be visible within our story because their craftsmanship is fundamental to what makes our products special.

When you choose a handcrafted collar, you're not simply purchasing a beautiful accessory for your Golden Retriever.

You're recognising the value of skilled artisan work.

You're helping create demand for traditional craftsmanship.

And you're supporting the people behind the product.

That's why we call it:

Beauty with Purpose.

So, What Is the Best Dog Collar for a Golden Retriever?

The best collar for a Golden Retriever should combine:

Strength.

Comfort.

Correct sizing.

Quality materials.

Reliable hardware.

Appropriate width.

Consideration for their thick coat.

And for owners who want something beyond the ordinary, a little individuality too.

A premium leather buckle collar can provide a wonderful combination of durability, comfort and timeless style for this active, affectionate breed.

At The Maasai Collection, we take that one step further by combining premium leather with extraordinary Maasai beadwork, handcrafted by the Mamas one bead at a time.

Because a Golden Retriever brings an enormous amount of colour to your life.

We think their collar should return the favour.
